NEW PODCASTS
EP 512 | FEBRUARY 3, 2025US Objects to HPE-Juniper Wedding; Cheeky DeepSeek Freaks VCsThis week on Network Break we scratch our heads over why the US Justice Department blocked the HPE-Juniper merger at the last minute, psychoanalyze why DeepSeek is freaking out investors, and discuss a healthy 2025 growth forecast for WLANs. We also cover financial results from Microsoft (really good, but not good enough for Wall Street), Intel (not great, but no one’s expecting much), and Check Point (steady and respectable). Plus more IT news! | LISTEN NOW |
EP 045 | FEBRUARY 4, 2025A Comprehensive Guide to Wi-Fi Explorer Pro 3: Features, Insights, and More!Wi-Fi Explore Pro is a popular wireless scanner. On today's show we dive into the tool with its creator, Adrian Granados. We also talk about the launch of the new book Wi-Fi Explorer Pro 3 - The Definitive User Guide, written by Granados and co-author Nigel Bowden. We delve into the history and features of Wi-Fi Explorer Pro, and discuss features of the book including practical lab exercises and foundational knowledge about Wi-Fi networking. | LISTEN NOW |
EP 048 | FEBRUARY 4, 2025News Roundup - 5G Vulnerabilities Abound, CSRB Disbanded, Magic Packets Target Juniper Routers, and MoreJJ and Drew catch you up on cybersecurity news including new research that uncovers a host of 5G/LTE vulnerabilities, the chain of breaches in a BeyondTrust attack that led to infiltration of the US Treasury Dept., a lawsuit against LinkedIn alleging that data from paying customers was used to train AI models, and ongoing attacks against Zyxel, Fortinet, SonicWall, and Ivanti. Plus even more infosec news analysis! | LISTEN NOW |
EP 264 | FEBRUARY 5, 2025Serverless Goes MainstreamServerless is mature enough now to be a mainstream choice for application development. But that doesn't mean interesting things aren't happening. Benjamen Pyle joins Kyler and Ned on Day Two DevOps to talk about the potential for small vendors and startups to develop high-quality services purpose-built to solve specific problems. They also discuss the benefits of Rust as a speedy language for Lambda, vendor lock-in, what we all can learn from Brent from The Phoenix Project, and more. | LISTEN NOW |
EP 012 | FEBRUARY 6, 2025Russ White On Why We Need Network ModelsWhy do we need network models such as OSI? Network architect and author Russ White joins Holly and Ethan to talk about how network models can help engineers ask intelligent questions and understand networking problems. And OSI isn't your only option--Russ digs into the RINA model and how it compares to OSI (which we covered in episode 5). This week’s bonus material is help in getting started creating your own network model to help understand any networking protocol. Russ is also writing a series on model-based thinking on the Packet Pushers blog. | LISTEN NOW |
EP 168 | FEBRUARY 6, 2025Deploying IPv6-Only Wi-Fi at the SC24 ConferenceWant to know how an IPv6-only wireless network was deployed at a conference with 18,000 attendees? Join us as we talk through the technical details with Tom Costello, a senior network engineer at Argonne National Laboratory. Tom volunteers at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC for short) to help build the world’s largest temporary network for conference-goers and exhibitors. At SC24, the conference decided to offer an IPv6-only Wi-FI SSID. Tom shares his experiences building this network, implementing RFC 8925, how he got into IPv6, and more. We also get a sneak peek of what's in store for SC25. | LISTEN NOW |
EP 015 | FEBRUARY 7, 2025Revolutionizing Telecom with NetOps Automation and CollaborationToday’s episode with guest Joan Garcia provides valuable insights into the complexities of modern network operations at a telco, the importance of collaboration across technical domains, and the strategic decisions that drive innovation in the telecom industry. Joan’s experiences and perspectives offer ideas for navigating the challenges of integrating different layers of network architecture while fostering a culture of automation and continuous improvement. Joan also advocates for fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous growth in network operators. | LISTEN NOW |
EP 767 | FEBRUARY 7, 2025Effective Networking on the CheapUnless you're building out AI infrastructure at a hyperscaler, you probably don't have unlimited dollars. On today's Heavy Networking we talk with guest Frank Seesink about how to build and operate networks effectively when money's tight. We look at free and open source tools, talk about the trade-offs that come with free software, and how a little curiosity can go a long way in extending your skill set. Importantly, we also discuss why a myopic focus on low CapEx can sometimes lead to a high TCO.| LISTEN NOW |

AutoCon2 Talk Summary: The Human Factor Of Using LLMs In Network Operations - Phillip Gervasi
At the Network Automation Forum‘s AutoCon2 conference held the week of November 18, 2024, Phillip Gervasi from Kentik discussed using large language models (LLMs) in network operations. Phil’s promise? We can augment ourselves as network engineers with LLMs. But LLMs will not replace us.
LLMs have problems that weigh on the network operations use case. Hallucinations. The challenge of processing real-time telemetry data. Diversity of data types and sources. Privacy & regulatory concerns. Plus, network engineers must learn the tech to make use of it. How do we handle these LLM challenges? By being a human in the loop. | READ NOW

AutoCon2 Talk Summary: Total Network Operations (TNOps): Navigating Disruption And Preparing For The Future - Scott Robohn
At the Network Automation Forum‘s AutoCon2 conference held the week of November 18, 2024, Scott Robohn (a NAF organizer) took the stage for an automation-adjacent talk: Total Network Operations (TNOps).
Scott’s paying attention to a group that often gets overlooked--network operations. He feels NetOps is an underserved community. (Because it is.) And yet, NetOps are the folks who keep the networks of the world up and running. | READ NOW

A Network Automation Case Study with Retailer Quick Trip - AutoCon2
The AutoCon2 conference took place in November 2024. Ethan Banks and I live-blogged the presentations on LinkedIn. Now that the presentations are available on YouTube (see below), I’m sharing my blog and the video here. You can register for AutoCon3 here.
This presentation is an automation case study with Quick Trip and Network to Code. The speakers are Aaron Drydale from Quick Trip and Joe Wesch from Network to Code. QuickTrip is a convenience store with 1,100 locations across the US in 18 states, and new stores being opened continually
They are being asked to do more with less. Staff won’t grow as fast as stores, so they are focusing on enablement. They want to free up engineering and support. | READ NOW
